Notaries in England and Wales comprise the oldest branch of the legal profession whose origins can be traced back to Roman times.
The qualifications required to be admitted to the profession include a post graduate diploma in Notarial Practice, Roman Law and Private International Law.
Upon qualification the Notary receives a Faculty which provides the necessary authority to practice.
This is granted by the Court of Faculties who regulates the profession.
All Notaries are required to have fidelity and professional indemnity insurance and to undertake compulsory continuing education.
