The Notaries Society

The Society represents approximately 850 Notaries practising in England and Wales. It was founded in 1882 and the Crest which appears at the top left corner of the pages of this website is that of The Notaries Society to whom it belongs.

The Society has an extensive role in representing Notaries and participates in their education and continuing professional development as well as representing the profession abroad. It also reviews new legislation which may have an impact on the profession.

The Society is run by its Council which comprises up to 25 members headed by its President. As Vice-President of the Council, I am responsible alongside other officers for promoting the profession here and abroad and maintaining high standards among its members.

In particular, I represent the Society at international meetings and have led a project to introduce electronic commerce to the profession (The Electronic Notary).

I am also Chairman of the sub-committee on Authentic Acts. As observer, the Society attends meetings of the International Union of Civil Law Notaries (UINL) and is a full member of the World Organisation of Notaries (WON).
